Welcome to Triple J Tours and the East Kimberley!
Triple J Tours is a multi-award winning company that provides the longest continuous daily river cruise in Australia – 55km on the Ord River between Kununurra and the Ord Top Dam at Lake Argyle.
The first company to offer tours on the Ord River, Triple J Tours was formed in May 1988 and continues to provide its guests with awe-inspiring scenic cruises as well as an informative and interesting commentary on the Ord River Irrigation Area.
The development of the Ord River Irrigation Area in the 1960s and 70s has seen the township of Kununurra flourish with a very successful agricultural industry. It has also become a very popular destination for nature-based and adventure tourism. Daily cruises navigate the massive stretch of river between the damming of the Ord River in two locations – the Diversion Dam was constructed in 1963 near Kununurra and the second damming occurred at Lake Argyle, 55kms upstream in 1972.
The Ord River provides one of the most stunning river systems in Australia – it is scenically beautiful and rich in wildlife and flora.
Commencing operations with a 15 seat jet-powered boat ‘Melaleuca’, the tour provided a return cruise to the Ord Top Dam. In late 1988, the company purchased a 19 seat Coaster bus and so began the cruise and land combination tour, which continues to this day. The most popular option ‘Ord River Day Tour’ has guests being collected from their accommodation in Kununurra by an air-conditioned coach/bus to Lake Argyle through ‘Durack’ country. Stopping off for a short visit to the Durack Homestead Museum, guests then go on to the Lake Argyle Village and a scenic lookout before driving across the 335m long, 98.5m high (from river bed) earth and rock-filled Ord Top Dam wall to the lower side to board their Triple J Tours cruise back to Kununurra. An informative and interesting commentary is provided on both the coach and the boat.
In 1990, a larger vessel was added to the fleet, ‘Brolga’, which was purchased from Safari Trek Australia (another operator on the Ord River) which came to Triple J Tours with coach clients, an area that has grown significantly for the company over the past 26 years. In 1996, Triple J Tours had the ‘Osprey’ constructed with an on-board toilet and the ability to seat 50 passengers and by this time, coach company work accounted for 50% of their income. A 37 seat Coach was purchased in 1995 and in 1997, the original boats ‘Melaleuca’ and ‘Brolga’ were upgraded with ergonomic seating and an on-board toilet.
In 1998, ‘Harrier’ was constructed with 28 seats and an on-board toilet.
The most recent addition to the fleet is the ‘Peregrine’ which was constructed on-site at Triple J Tours in 2008. This vessel is a modern and comfortable boat and can seat 50 passengers. An on-board toilet is also on this vessel.
The area between Kununurra and the Ord Top Dam is a RAMSAR listed (RAMSAR empowers its member countries to maintain the ecological character of their Wetlands of International Importance and to plan for the “wise use”, or sustainable use, of all of the wetlands in their territories)water source and as such, a bird-lovers paradise.
Triple J Tours aim to ‘passionately provide the most informative and enjoyable river cruising experience in Australia’ – you won’t want to miss it!
